Jack Collison

2026 Energy Fellow Policy, Economics & Society

Bio: Jack Collison is an economist whose research focuses on energy markets, industrial organization, and econometrics. His work spans petroleum, electricity, transportation, and electric vehicle markets, with an emphasis on understanding how firms and consumers make decisions in complex settings. He frequently adapts deep learning methods to estimate structural models and to better connect economic theory with data. Jack earned his Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he also completed an M.A. in Economics. He holds an M.S. in Statistics from Stanford University and a B.A. with Honors from Stanford University. His research aims to inform policy and industry decisions in the evolving global energy and transportation sectors.

Postdoctoral research project: Refining the Energy Transition: Spillovers in Global Oil and Electric Vehicle Markets.  The economic implications of the global energy transition remain uncertain, particularly at the intersection of oil and electric vehicle markets. Existing research typically examines these markets in isolation despite the important interactions across products and countries. Under the mentorship of Hunt Allcott and Shanjun Li, Jack’s research at Stanford will bridge this gap by explicitly modeling the global interactions between these markets to inform sound policy decisions. By combining interdisciplinary insights from economic theory, energy systems, and computational methods, he will generate novel empirical evidence on how industry and consumer incentives interact during the global energy transition, offering guidance to lawmakers on sustainable policy design.
